Bulgogi with Rice and Lettuce

Thin ribbons of beef marinated in a sweet soy and pear sauce, grilled quickly and served with rice and fresh lettuce wraps.

Ingredients

Quantities are for one portion.

  • 30 gsugar
  • 70 gdry white rice
  • 150 gthinly sliced beef (ribeye or sirloin)
  • 50 glettuce leaves
  • 1 tbspsesame oil
  • 1 smallpear, grated
  • 30 mlsoy sauce
  • 1 tspgrated garlic

Method

  1. Steam the white rice until fluffy. Set aside.
  2. In a bowl, combine the soy sauce, sugar, sesame oil, grated garlic, and grated pear to create the marinade.
  3. Add the thinly sliced beef to the marinade. Toss well to coat and let it sit for a few minutes.
  4. Heat a grill or wide pan until very hot.
  5. Lay the beef slices flat in the pan. Sear quickly on both sides to caramelize the sugar in the marinade without overcooking the meat.
  6. Transfer the hot beef to a plate.
  7. Serve alongside the steamed rice and fresh lettuce leaves to create small wraps (ssam).
