Ingredients

Quantities are for one portion.

  • 50 mlwater
  • 15 gsugar
  • 200 gfirm tofu
  • 100 gshort-grain white rice (dry weight)
  • 1 tbspsesame oil
  • 10 gsesame seeds
  • 20 mlsoy sauce
  • 2garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tbspgochugaru (Korean red pepper flakes)
  • 1spring onion, chopped

Method

  1. Rinse the short-grain rice and cook it according to the package instructions.
  2. Cut the tofu into thick rectangular slices, then pat dry with a paper towel.
  3. In a bowl, mix the gochugaru, soy sauce, garlic, sugar, water, and half of the sesame oil to create the braising sauce.
  4. Heat the remaining sesame oil in a pan over medium heat and pan-fry the tofu slices until golden brown on both sides.
  5. Pour the braising sauce over the fried tofu in the pan, turn down the heat, and simmer until the sauce is reduced and coats the tofu.
  6. Serve the spicy braised tofu over the warm rice, garnished with the chopped spring onion and sesame seeds.
